Nerello Mascalese

Red wine

Nerello Mascalese is the pale, high-acid red grape grown on the volcanic slopes of Sicily's Mount Etna, where old, ungrafted vines are still common. Its light colour and firm structure have drawn constant comparisons to Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo, though its flavour leans more toward red cherry, dried herbs, and a distinct smoky, mineral edge from the volcanic soil it grows in. It rarely reaches the deep colour or heavy tannin of a typical bold red, favouring acidity and elegance instead.

Also known as Nerello, Niureddu Mascalisi.
