Bakhmut

Region

Bakhmut, in Ukraine's Donetsk region, was home to Artwinery, one of the world's largest sparkling wine cellars: nearly 50 million bottles aged using the traditional method inside a 19th-century gypsum mine more than 70 metres underground. Production stopped after the city was destroyed during Russia's full-scale invasion of 2022–2023, though hundreds of thousands of bottles were rescued from the mine before it fell.
