Country

Japan is a small but steadily growing wine-producing country, historically overshadowed by sake and shochu in its drinking culture. Domestic viticulture is concentrated in a few regions with drier microclimates, most notably Yamanashi around Mount Fuji, where both native and international grape varieties are grown.

Yamanashi Prefecture

Yamanashi, centered on the Kōfu Basin near Mount Fuji, is Japan's top wine-producing prefecture and the historic heart of the country's viticulture, especially around the town of Kōshū. A rain-shadow effect from Mount Fuji keeps the region notably drier than much of humid Japan, which helps grapes ripen and stay healthier through the growing season.
