The Yarra Valley, near Melbourne, is one of Australia's oldest and most prominent cool-climate wine regions, with vineyards dating to the 1830s. Its mild climate and fertile soils are especially well suited to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, both as still wines and as the base for sparkling wine.
