Mavrud

Mavrud is a rare, late-ripening red grape native to Bulgaria's Thracian lowlands, prized for its small berries, low yields, and ability to produce dense, tannic wines with real aging potential. It typically shows a spicy, dark-berried character, and some ampelographers speculate it may be an ancient relative of the French grape Mourvèdre, though this link is unconfirmed. Outside Bulgaria it remains little known, but within the country it's considered one of the great native reds.
