Gattinara, from hillside vineyards above the Sesia River in northern Piedmont, produces long-lived Nebbiolo-based reds (locally called Spanna) that were historically prized even above Barolo for their aging potential. Extended barrel and bottle maturation gives the wines added complexity and structure.
