Uruguay is South America's fourth-largest wine producer, built around Tannat, a robust red grape introduced by Basque immigrants in 1870 that has become the country's signature variety. It also has a growing reputation for Albariño whites, brought by Galician immigrants in 1954, alongside widely planted international varieties, with vineyards concentrated in the departments north of Montevideo such as Canelones, Colonia, and San José.
