Roter Veltliner ('red Veltliner') is a historic Austrian white grape named for its pinkish-red skin — but despite the similar name, it's not genetically related to the far more famous Grüner Veltliner. Once nearly forgotten, it survives today mainly around Austria's Wagram district, where loess soils help it produce full-bodied white wines with racy, mouth-watering acidity, ripe stone-fruit and citrus flavors, and a savory white-pepper spice note. Top examples can age for a decade or more, developing nutty, honeyed complexity.
