Sémillon

White wine Bordeaux

Sémillon is a low-acid white grape that produces rich, almost oily-textured wines, ranging from understated dry whites to some of the most famous sweet wines in the world. In Bordeaux's Sauternes region it's the backbone of luscious dessert wine made from grapes affected by noble rot — a beneficial fungus that shrivels the berries and concentrates their sugar. Dry versions, especially from Australia's Hunter Valley, start out lean and citrusy but develop toasty, honeyed richness with age.

Also known as Blanc doux, Colombier, Hunter River Riesling, Malaga.
