GreeceXinomavro — its name literally means 'sour black' in Greek — is the signature red grape of northern Greece, especially the Naoussa region, and is often compared to Italy's Nebbiolo for its combination of high tannin and high acidity. Young wines can be quite firm and savory, with tomato, olive, and red cherry notes, but the best examples soften and develop complexity over many years in the bottle, much like a Barolo. It's frequently blended with the grape Negoska for a fruitier, more approachable style.
