Petit Verdot is a deeply colored, thick-skinned Bordeaux red grape that ripens so late it often struggled to mature in France's cooler vintages, which is why it's traditionally used only in small amounts to add color, tannin, and backbone to Cabernet-based blends. On its own, especially in warmer regions like Australia, Spain, or California, it makes intensely dark, full-bodied wines with firm tannins and aromas of violet, blackberry, and a distinctive pencil-shavings note. It's a powerful, structured grape best suited to fans of bold reds.
