Carignan

Red wine Priorat

Carignan is a hardy, high-yielding Mediterranean red grape, also known as Mazuelo or Cariñena in Spain, that was historically planted for bulk production but is now prized for old-vine bottlings, especially in France's Languedoc and Spain's Priorat. It naturally produces wines with high acidity and firm, sometimes astringent tannins, which is why it's traditionally softened by blending with Grenache or Syrah. Old, low-yielding vines can produce concentrated, rustic reds with dark fruit and peppery, herbal character.

Also known as Carignane, Carignano, Cariñena, Carinyena, Mazuelo, Samsó.
