Tempranillo

Red wine Ribera del Duero

Tempranillo is Spain's signature red grape, the backbone of Rioja and Ribera del Duero. It's relatively low in acidity and tannin on its own, giving it a smooth, approachable character with flavors of plum and strawberry, though extended aging in oak barrels — traditional in Rioja — adds notes of leather, tobacco, and vanilla. Its name comes from 'temprano,' Spanish for 'early,' a nod to how early it ripens.

Also known as Aragonez, Cencibel, Tinta del País, Tinta Fino, Tinta Roriz, Ull de Llebre.
