Mourvèdre

Red wine Jumilla

Mourvèdre is a thick-skinned Mediterranean red grape — also known as Monastrell in Spain and Mataro in the US and Australia — that needs plenty of heat and sunshine to ripen fully. It produces deeply colored, full-bodied wines with high tannins and often high alcohol, along with earthy, gamey, and blackberry flavors that mellow into leather and spice notes with age. It's a key blending partner in Rhône-style GSM (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre) blends and forms the backbone of France's Bandol region.

Also known as Mataro, Monastrell.
