Nero d'Avola ("the black grape of Avola") is Sicily's flagship red, named for the sun-baked town where it originated. It makes warm, full-bodied wines with ripe, rounded tannins — the drying grip from grape skins, here softened by Sicily's heat — deep blackberry fruit, and a peppery edge that has earned it comparisons to New World Shiraz.

Also known as Calabrese.
